Small Chess Set - Wawa January 2025

Project overview

I made this small chess set in January 2025. It's part of my "Wawa" series - compact sets that are easy to travel with. This one took about 60 hours to make. The pieces are smaller than standard size but still comfortable to play with.

Making small chess sets

Working in a smaller format is tricky. Each piece still needs to be recognizable and easy to handle, but you have less space to work with. The challenge is keeping everything proportional so it still plays like a real chess set, just smaller.

Design approach

The Wawa design focuses on:

  • Small size: Fits easily in a bag or small space
  • Proportions: Each piece scaled correctly relative to the others
  • Portability: Easy to take anywhere
  • Details: Still has nice carving work despite the smaller size

Technical details

  • Material: Premium quality wood (linden or similar hardwood)
  • Dimensions: Small format pieces optimized for compact play
  • Finish: Natural wood finish with protective coating
  • Technique: Hand-carved using traditional woodcarving tools
  • Design: Wawa-inspired patterns with geometric precision
  • Duration: Approximately 60+ hours of handwork
  • Style: Compact chess set with traditional aesthetics
