Chess board in roman gold & dark blue colors - 2025¶
Project Overview¶
I finished this chess board in December 2025. It's carved on both sides with Roman gold and dark blue colors. The colors work well together and make the board stand out. I put a lot of time into the carving details to make sure it looked good and played well.
The art of chess board making¶
Adding colors to a chess board is tricky. You want it to look good, but the squares still need to be clearly different for playing. I carved this on both sides, so you can flip it over if needed. The Roman gold and dark blue create a nice contrast that works for both looks and function.
Design philosophy¶
I went with a simple approach:
- Colors: Roman gold and dark blue look good together and provide clear contrast
- Two sides: Carved on both sides so you get more use out of it
- Details: Added some carving details to make it more interesting
- Function: The squares are still clear and proportional for actual play
- Classic pattern: Traditional 64-square layout, just with better colors
Technical details¶
- Material: Premium quality wood (hardwood suitable for detailed carving)
